🌊 Waterfall Walks Worth the Weekend
Simple overnight ideas in Canada & California
This time of year, seasonal allergies usually hit me pretty hard, so some days bike rides get bumped down the list. Even when the weather is decent, I still want to get outside — just at a slower pace.
That is usually when a good scenic walk fills the gap. One of my go-to spots this time of year is Burritts Rapids, just south of Ottawa — an easy riverside stretch with historic character, peaceful views, and a coffee stop nearby.
That easygoing feeling became this week’s challenge:
Find 3 spring escapes built around a great walk, good local food, and an overnight that keeps things simple.
I used the GTMTB Assistant to sort for trips that feel low-friction, seasonally right, and genuinely worth the weekend.
Here’s what it found.

💡Quick Summary
🌊 Fastest big-waterfall payoff — Shannon Falls + Squamish, British Columbia
A dramatic spring stop with almost no walking required.
🌿 Most iconic spring waterfall walk — Lower Yosemite Fall + Yosemite Valley, California
Classic Yosemite scenery with an easy paved route that feels especially worth it in spring.
🏙️ Simplest city-plus-waterfall escape — Montmorency Falls + Québec City, Québec
Big views, easy walking, and an overnight that comes together with very little effort.
🧭 My Practical Pick
If I wanted the lowest-friction weekend of the three right now, I’d rank them this way:
Why Shannon Falls comes out on top:
BC Parks calls it an easy 350 m trail, so the waterfall payoff starts almost right away
spring water levels make it feel especially worth it right now
the stop at Fergie’s cafe and overnight at Sunwolf Lodge make the food-and-overnight side unusually easy
if you want to turn it into more of a full day, the Sea to Sky Gondola is right nearby, just past Shannon Falls Provincial Park
It delivers that quiet Squamish-area escape feel without needing much work from you
Sometimes the best spring trip is the one that comes together easily.
☕ Worth the Stop
Sometimes one great stop is what turns a waterfall visit into a real weekend away.
Québec City, Québec
This one works because it keeps the day anchored around the falls instead of sending you off on a separate detour. After an easy visit to Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, it gives the outing a place to slow down, eat, and linger a little longer.
Why it works
keeps the Montmorency Falls setting front and center
easy to pair with a viewpoints-and-walkways style visit
adds a more memorable food stop without complicating the day
fits easily with an Old Québec overnight afterwards, only about 15 minutes away
It helps this option feel like more than a quick look at the falls.
🌲 Scenic Payoff

Yosemite Valley, California
The kind of place that makes an easy walk feel much bigger than it is.
I actually walked this trail with my wife on our honeymoon, so this one has some personal weight for me. What still stands out is how little effort it takes to reach something this iconic. The Lower Yosemite Fall Trail is an easy paved walk, but in spring the heavy spray, loud water, and valley walls make it feel like a full Yosemite moment.
Why it lands
the walk is only about 1 mile / 1.6 km round trip
spring is when the waterfall feels the most alive
the paved route keeps the outing approachable
Yosemite Valley Lodge makes it easier to turn the walk into a true overnight
Best moment: getting close enough to feel the mist in the air and remembering how much scenery Yosemite gives you for so little effort.
🧰 This Week’s Practical Gear Pick
One thing I’ve learned from visiting all three of these spots over the years: if you get close to the falls, the mist can absolutely get you.
Sometimes that is part of the fun. Sometimes it is less ideal when you still have the rest of the day ahead.
That is why this week’s pick is simple:
• compact enough to stash in a daypack
• useful when the spray is heavier than expected
• helps keep the walk comfortable
• cheap enough that you do not have to overthink it
A compact poncho is not glamorous, but for waterfall walks like these, it makes a lot of sense.
