š Fall Colours, Cozy Stays
Overnight + colourful trails

Fall colours are holding on around here, and Iāve been making the most of themāon mountain and gravel bikes, on foot, and even with an overnight stay. My legs are still feeling yesterdayās afternoon ride as I write this.
This is my favourite time of year to be outside.
A few weeks ago, our family stayed in a newly built Scandinavian-inspired glamping cabin in Gatineau Park. The campground had been renovated over the past couple of years, and we arrived to peak colours, deer near our cabin, and a quiet evening in the woods.

It was a good reminder that a memorable outdoor escape doesnāt need to be complicated.
With that weekend still fresh in mind, I gave the GTMTB Assistant a new brief:
Find three overnight fall foliage getaways across Canada and the United States. Pair a memorable place to stay with an approachable ride, hike, or walk, and aim to keep each adventure under $500.
Hereās what it came up with.

I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.
Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale ā so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.
The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3ā5 days ā straight to your door, from 39Ā¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

šÆ Why Each Option Fits the Constraint
Kelowna, British Columbia ā Scenic Gravel Ride
Why it fits
Budget: The preliminary CAD $300ā$450 estimate leaves room beneath the US$500 ceiling, subject to exchange rates and your final room price.
Best value: Pairing Hotel Zed with a scenic rail-trail ride keeps the adventure focused on a memorable stay and time outside.
Activity fit: Myra Canyonās gentle railway grades let you enjoy trestle bridges and autumn scenery without technical mountain biking. Choose a shorter out-and-back to suit your pace.
Off-bike: Dinner downtown and a waterfront walk the next morning round out the overnight without a packed schedule.
Main trade-off
The canyon requires a drive from town, and access-road conditions and autumn weather need checking.
The estimate assumes you bring your own bike. Add rental costs before booking if needed.
Traverse City, Michigan ā Lakeside Ride/Walk
Why it fits
Budget: At roughly US$260ā$410, the overnight leaves US$90ā$240 beneath the US$500 ceiling.
Best value: A modest vintage motel and a lakeside activity keep the plan simple, with room for casual meals.
Activity fit: The roughly 4 mile Boardman Lake Loop works as a relaxed ride or walk, making this a flexible choice for mixed interests.
Off-trail: Downtown food stops and an Old Mission Peninsula drive add variety without another major activity expense.
Main trade-off
Timing matters: the usual early-to-mid-October foliage window makes this better suited to an earlier fall escape than a late-season colour chase.
Walking keeps costs simplest; bike rentals would need to fit within the remaining budget.
Brevard, North Carolina ā Waterfall Hike
Why it fits
Budget: At roughly US$280ā$430, the overnight leaves US$70ā$220 beneath the US$500 ceiling.
Best value: A characterful stay at the Sunset Motel pairs with waterfall stops and forest scenery rather than costly excursions.
Activity fit: Moore Cove Falls offers a short hike with a rewarding destination, leaving time to enjoy the forest without committing to a demanding day.
Off-trail: Looking Glass Falls and a relaxed Brevard breakfast give the trip a natural two-day rhythm.
Main trade-off
This is the hiking-led option, with less emphasis on riding than the other getaways.
Foliage varies by elevation, and wet weather can make trails slippery. Check current access and conditions before setting your route.
š§ My Practical Pick
Why Brevard stands out
A better seasonal fit: Its typical mid-October into early-November foliage window makes it the more promising option for a later fall escape.
More than the leaves: Waterfalls, forest scenery and a characterful motel give the trip appeal even if the colours arenāt at their peak.
Realistic overnight pacing: A short hike, a waterfall stop and an evening in town make a satisfying getaway without squeezing in too much.
Why that matters
Fall colours are a reason to go, but they shouldnāt carry the entire trip.
Brevard leaves room to:
Hike to Moore Cove Falls
Stop at Looking Glass Falls
Enjoy a casual dinner downtown
Settle into the retro Sunset Motel
Take your time over breakfast before heading home
That combination feels closest to what inspired this issue: a memorable overnight built around time outside.
Trade-offs
Budget: The preliminary US$280ā$430 estimate leaves US$70ā$220 beneath the ceiling, excluding travel to Brevard.
Driving: Youāll need a car to connect the town, trail and waterfall stops.
Conditions: Foliage varies by elevation, and rain can make trails slippery. Confirm current access before planning around a specific hike.
The key is to keep it simple: one night, one main hike and a few easy stops. Check the final room totalāincluding taxes and feesābefore committing.
Final comparison
Best for scenic cycling: Kelowna
Best for an easy lakeside ride or walk: Traverse City
My pick for a later fall overnight: Brevard
ā Worth the Stop
Traverse City, Michigan
After a ride or walk around Boardman Lake, Higher Grounds makes a worthwhile next stop: coffee in a former hospital laundry building, with woodland trails nearby.
The cafĆ© and working roastery sit within the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, where historic buildings have found new life as shops, restaurants and community spaces. Itās a distinctive setting for slowing down over a warm drink.
If you still have energy, the adjacent Commons Natural Area offers wooded hillsides, streams and unpaved walking trailsāa different perspective from the morningās lakeside loop.
Why it works
adds a memorable coffee stop after the ride
pairs historic architecture with nearby woodland
works as a short break or a longer wander
gives you something to enjoy beyond the foliage
keeps spending flexible: start with coffee and see where the afternoon goes
The lake loop gives you the open views. The Commons gives you a reason to linger.
š Help Shape What Comes Next
OpenAI is scheduled to retire Custom GPTs on December 11, 2026, which means the current GTMTB Assistant will be retiring too. The newsletter will continue, but how I share practical outdoor escapes will evolve.
ChatGPT has become much more versatile since I first built the Assistant. Much of the trip planning that once benefited from a dedicated tool can now be done in a regular chatāwith a clear prompt and a few follow-up questions.
Thatās why Iāll keep including copy-and-paste planning prompts alongside the newsletterās destination ideas, practical picks and worthwhile stops.
Itās also a good moment to hear from you! Before deciding what comes next, Iād like to understand what you value most?
