🔥3 Rideable MTB Trips You Can Do Right Now
Shorts & T-Shirt: East, West & South
As I’m writing this, my mind keeps drifting toward warmer weather — and getting back on the mountain bike.
It’s been a fantastic fat bike season. Quiet trails. Crisp air. That steady winter grind.
But I won’t lie… the thought of riding in shorts and a t-shirt instead of base layers is starting to win.
So this week, I gave the GTMTB Assistant a challenge:
Can it uncover three U.S. mountain bike trips where I could ride right now in shorts and a t-shirt —one in the East, one in the West, and one in the South?
(I left Canada off the list. I was shovelling the driveway yesterday.)
Let’s see what it comes up with.
P.S. If you haven’t tried the GTMTB Assistant yet, open the custom ChatGPT and throw your own outdoor challenge at it. It’s free for subscribers.

East: 🌴 Ocala, Florida — Santos Trailhead
Forecast when I ran the Assistant: Low–mid 80s°F, mostly sunny, with a slight chance of late-week showers. (And yes — it can pull current conditions anytime you use it.)
Why it works: Warm, dry riding right now. Big-mile XC flow. Technical features if you want them. Easy to scale from beginner-friendly loops to full-day efforts.
Ride vibe: Fast singletrack, rolling terrain, optional skills features, and the ability to string together serious mileage without repeating yourself.
🚵 Quick 2-Day Plan
Day 1:
Start at Santos Trailhead and build a sampler loop. Add in skills features or optional tech lines if that’s your thing.
Day 2:
Go long. Santos is famous for letting you stack miles with minimal overlap — perfect for that “I’m riding in shorts in February” feeling.

💡 Pro Tip: Florida afternoons can pop up quick thunderstorms. Start your long ride early and save shorter laps or skills park time for later in the day.
South: 🌦️ Austin / Hill Country, Texas — Spider Mountain + Brushy Creek
Forecast when I ran the Assistant: Upper 70s to low 80s°F, with mid-week storm chances and sunnier skies by the weekend. (It can pull current conditions anytime you run it.)
Why it works: Warm temps, big terrain, and two completely different ride styles within easy reach.
Ride vibe: Lift-served downhill laps at Spider Mountain + classic Austin tech at Brushy Creek (rocky, punchy, fun).
🚵 Quick 2-Day Plan
Day 1:
Ride Spider Mountain Bike Park — chairlift laps mean maximum descending with minimal logistics.
Day 2:
Head to Brushy Creek. Choose smoother flow options or dive into the chunkier “local legend” lines if you want more tech.

⚠️ Trail Note: After Texas storms, some trails can get slick or fragile. Always check local status before heading out.
West: ☀️ Tucson, Arizona — Catalina State Park + 50-Year Trail
Forecast when I ran the Assistant: Low 70s to mid-80s°F, mostly dry, with a slight shower chance later in the week. (You can pull updated conditions anytime you run it.)
Why it works: Reliable warmth, classic Sonoran desert scenery, and a trail network that lets you dial the difficulty up or down.
Ride vibe: Flowing desert singletrack, saguaros, wide-open views — and the freedom to “mix your own spice level.”
🚵 Quick 2-Day Plan
Day 1:
Start in Catalina State Park and connect into the 50-Year Trail system for a Tucson sampler.
Day 2:
Stick to smoother lower trails — or step it up with more technical desert options.
Official site: Catalina State Park — Trails
⚠️ Permit Note: Parts of the broader 50-Year system may require an Arizona State Lands recreation permit. Verify before you go.
💡 Pro Tip: Desert rule = early start + electrolytes. Even when it’s “only” the 80s, the sun hits differently.

🤖 How the GTMTB Assistant is Evolving
Every trip I write about starts as a question to the GTMTB Assistant — and each article makes it a little sharper.
Unexpected bonus: When I asked for warm places to ride right now, it pulled in current weather conditions for each destination.
That wasn’t something I originally built for — but it’s a welcome addition when planning around seasons.
You can use the same custom GPT to plan your own trips anywhere in North America, based on your skill level, time, season, and travel style.
